Resize an image for an X (Twitter) post

Get your photo to 1200 × 675 pixels and under 5 MB — the size X (Twitter) recommends for a post. It is already set below, and nothing is uploaded.

How images are shown in a post

A single image in an X post is shown at a 16:9 shape in the timeline, and 1200 × 675 pixels is a good working size, with a limit of 5 MB. The timeline previews the image cropped to fit, and tapping it shows the full picture. So the preview is what people see first, and the part of the image that stays inside the 16:9 frame is what has to carry the message.

Resizing for a post

  1. Drop your image on this page. The 1200 × 675 size is already selected and the 5 MB limit applied.
  2. Crop to 16:9, with the main subject and any text inside the frame.
  3. Download and attach it to your post.

Making the preview work

  • Put the subject near the middle. The preview crops from the centre, so edges can be lost.
  • Use large text. Small type is unreadable in a timeline.
  • Mind the corners. The platform may overlay small icons on a corner of the picture.
  • Use a landscape original. A tall image will be cropped to a thin band in the preview.

Image rules on social platforms change often. If the exact result matters, for example for an ad, check the platform’s own documentation. For a profile header, see X header, and see the X image size guide for more formats. To keep files small, compress to 500 KB.
