Facebook Image Size Guide (2026): Posts, Links & Profile

Facebook shows the same picture in a dozen places — the feed, a link preview, a Story, a circle on your profile — and crops it differently in each. Upload without thinking about size and the part you cared about is often the part that gets cut off. Here are the sizes to aim for and how to prepare them.

Checked against current guides in September 2026. Facebook adjusts its layouts regularly, so if the upload screen shows a different recommendation, follow that.

Link previews and shared images

When you share a link, Facebook builds a card from the page’s Open Graph image. 1200 × 630 pixels (1.91:1) is the standard size. Much smaller images can end up as a tiny thumbnail beside the link instead of a large card. If you run a website, this is the size to use for your og:image:

Facebook caches link previews, so changing the image on your site doesn’t change existing shares straight away. Paste the URL into Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to make it fetch the new version.

Feed photos

Portrait 4:5 photos take up the most room in the feed; square photos work everywhere. Facebook recompresses uploads, so give it a sharp, correctly sized file at 1080 pixels wide rather than a huge original.

Profile picture

Upload a square image of at least 400 × 400 pixels. Facebook shows it as a circle — roughly 176 pixels across on desktop and about 196 on phones — so keep your face centred with a little space around it.

Cover photos

A cover photo is a wide banner, and Facebook shows a different crop on desktop and on mobile. The recommended pixel size has changed several times, so rather than quote a number that may be out of date: keep the subject centred, keep text away from the edges, and use the preview Facebook shows while you reposition the image before you save.

Getting the file ready, step by step

  1. Crop the photo to the shape you need in the crop tool.
  2. Resize it to the exact pixels — the link preview page sets 1200 × 630, and the 1080 × 1080 page covers a square post.
  3. Check the before/after slider for sharpness.
  4. Download as JPG for photographs, or PNG for a logo or text-heavy graphic.

Common mistakes

  • Sharing a link with a tiny or missing preview image, which produces a small, easy-to-miss card.
  • Putting a face or text right at the edge of a cover photo, where one device or another will crop it.
  • Assuming an updated website image changes existing link previews — it doesn’t until Facebook re-fetches it.
  • Uploading screenshots of photos, which adds a layer of compression.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best size for a Facebook post image?

1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5) or 1080 × 1080 (square) for feed photos, and 1200 × 630 for a shared-link image.

What size is a Facebook link preview image?

1200 × 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. It is the same size websites use for their Open Graph image.

Why is my Facebook profile picture cropped?

Facebook shows profile pictures as a circle. Anything near the corners of a square image is cut off, so keep the important part in the middle.

Why does Facebook show an old image for my link?

Because it caches previews. Run the URL through Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to refresh it.
